How to... feel more comfortable in a wide legged seated forward fold

A wide legged seated forward fold has tons of benefits: if we're comfortable, it can stretch our lower back, hips, inner thighs, hamstrings, crikey it can be a great pose. But if we're uncomfortable, it's easy to miss out on those fabulous feelings and instead find ourselves waiting for the pose to be over.
The key is to get into the right position for your body before you start reaching forward. Here are 3 tips to help you on your way!

Sit with your legs a comfortable distance apart
It can be tempting to try to open your legs as wide as possible, but that can be hard to sustain and become pretty uncomfortable as you start to move forward.
Instead, start with your legs a more comfortable distance apart and ease yourself into a wider position as you settle into the pose.

Use props to help you sit tall
Sitting on a cushion or block will lift your hips a little higher which often helps sit tall - which is where you need to be as you move forward.
Next rolls blankets (or mats!) under your knees for added support.

Bend your knees generously
This will help to release tension in your hamstrings and mean that you may be able to move into a deeper fold so that you still get all the benefits of the pose.
Once you find your perfect starting point, bring your hands to the floor in front of you. Keeping your chest lifted, fold forwards from your hips and walk your hands away from you.
Think about keeping your spine long and use your breath to help you relax into the pose.
To come out, walk your hands back towards and come back to your original sitting position.
