Seated sun salutation: a chair yoga flow for every body and every space

One of the things that I find so great about yoga is that it can be adapted for the situation you find yourself in. It can be fast or slow, energetic or gentle, and props - like blocks, straps, or a chair - can support your practice in all kinds of ways.

Take a sun salutation, for example. If I’m feeling like I’d really like to get my blood pumping, each breath brings a new pose. If I want something that’s going to build strength, I hold each pose for longer. And if I need to recharge, I move through the poses slowly and gently.

One of my favourite variations is a sun salutation chair sequence. It’s ideal when you want a full-body stretch but don’t have much space or if standing poses aren’t right for you today.

Notice what you need from your practice today and move through the poses quickly, slowly or gently.

A chair sun salutation. Start sitting in a chair, inhale lift through the front. Exhale, roll back shoulders. Inhale, lift arms above head. Exhale fold forwards. Inhale, hands on thighs lift body halfway. Exhale fold forward. Inhale, hands on things lift body halfway. Exhale fold forward. Inhale, sit up lift arms above head. Exhale arms back down

Yoga doesn’t have to be complicated - or done standing up. If you’d like to explore mindful movement that meets you where you are, I’d love to help. I’m based in Sevenoaks and work with individuals and groups to build confidence, calm, and connection through yoga, coaching and conversation.
